2025 Steel Tariffs | Buy Now? Buy Later? American Made? Will it effect my project?

Steel and aluminum tariffs started yesterday 2/10/2025, being that Providence Steel Solutions only provides American Made Red Iron buildings there should be no change in pricing for my steel building project. Right.

Luckily we've seen this before so let us break it down for you.

To be brief and not beat a dead horse as steel increases get tossed around in this industry daily.

Just like 2018, American steel mills are going to raise their prices. In 2018 we saw close to a 25% increase. We don't think it will be that high this time, but we will see a an increase nonetheless.

Why? In 2018 by making foreign steel costlier, the tariffs allowed US steel makers to raise their prices and encouraged them to keep mills running and to invest in new capacity.

It also gave America's struggling steel producers some relief from intense global competition, allowing them to charge higher prices.

Shares of steel producers climbed yesterday in anticipation of the new tariffs. Nucor rose 5.6% and Cleveland-Cliffs jumped 17.9%.

Great for American steel! Right?

Yes and no.

In the long run yes.

But right now. Prices are going to rise.

In 2018 the tariffs took a toll on "downstream" US companies, like us, that had to take on price increases from the mills.

It was hard telling folks that the building we quoted a month ago was now 25% more.

I read an article this morning from AP news and they interviewed a US business that nailed it all on the head.

"Timothy Zimmerman CEO of Mitchell Metal Products in Merrill Wisconsin.

"We we're significantly impacted, We saw steel prices rise 70% over what they had been...Our steel suppliers simply broke contracts and gave us an option. Take this or take nothing."

Zimmerman is bracing for the new tariffs to hit.

"Already last week several large mills operating in the United States announced price increases in anticipation of the new tariffs, not due to demand," he said, "I think domestic producers will work to do the same thing, or very close to same thing, as what happened in 2018."

Bottom line the tariffs could be a really great thing for American Made Steel.

But the prices are going to go up.
